Kaga embroidery

The name of Japanese Embroidery, or nihon shishu in Japanese, varies from place to place, so the embroidery produced in Kyoto is called Kyoshu (Kyoto Embroidery), in Edo (the modern-day Tokyo) it is called Edo shishu (Edo Embroidery), and in Kaga (the modern-day Kanazawa City) it is called Kaga nui (Kaga Embroidery). Today, Kyoshu and Kaga Embroidery are designated as "Traditional Crafts (government-designated traditional crafts)" by the Ministry for Economy, Trade and Industry. Japanese embroidery originated from the technique of expressing the figure of Buddha in embroidery that had been introduced from China.  Thereafter, Japanese Embroidery developed, being applied to the decoration of the clothes of the nobility and the stage costumes of the Japanese court musicians (Gagaku). In the Edo period (1603–1868), various uses of Japanese embroidery were enhanced, such as the Kosode (the kimono), the Uchikake (the outer kimono robe), and the Buddhist altar cloths. From the Meiji period (1868–1912) to early in the Showa period (1926–1989), embroidery work was one of Japan's means of acquiring foreign currency, and a large number of needlepainting embroideries of high quality were produced.  This trip will offer you the opportunity to visit the workshop of the famous artist.
