Ushikubi Pongee, or Ushikubi Tsumugi

Ushikubi pongee originated in the mid 12th century in Ushikubi Village, at the foot of the Japanese Alps, near Mt. Hakusan, one of the Japanese sacred mountains. It has been developed as an important local industry under the promotion of local Samurai lords. Ushikubi pongee has a soft feel but exceptionally strong. Since it is woven with thick silk yarn with burls, which are spun out from doupions, or "double cocoons", jointly generated by two silkworms, it is very tough and has simple and rustic beauty. It is generally used for "Kimono" and other items of traditional Japanese dress and now attracts more fans, both domestically and across the world, as it is used for Western clothes and has been used in haute couture collections in Paris.
